Regulatory Compliance

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and UAC oversee the University of Arizona’s animal care and use program; providing humane care and use of animals, facilitating research and education programs, and assuring compliance with federal and state laws, regulations, policies, and guidelines. In addition, the University maintains voluntary accreditation through AAALAC International.

Our centralized program complies with:

  • The Animal Welfare Act/Animal Welfare Regulations (AWA/AWR), and other applicable federal regulations such as GLP, for covered species and activities;
  • The National Research Council Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals 8th Edition (Guide) for all vertebrate animals used in biomedical research;
  • The Guide for Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Research and Teaching 3rd Edition (Ag Guide) for production farm animal research and teaching.

This institution is compliant with PHS Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals; is guided by the U.S. Government Principles for the Utilization and Care of Vertebrate Animals Used in Testing, Research, and Training; and has an approved OLAW Assurance which covers all vertebrate animals used in biomedical research.
